JERSEY’S FIRST RECORDED 30LB FRESHWATER FISH

A night to remember for Jersey Freshwater Angling Association member Tony Jeanne when, at 3am on the morning of 17th March this year, he hooked into and successfully landed Jersey’s first recorded freshwater fish weighing over 30lb.

Having picked up his legered ‘boilie’ bait and following a sometimes frenzied fight from the monster, lasting 20 minutes and taken from a swim in the shallows at Grands Vaux reservoir, St Saviour, the superb and beautifully scaled Mirror Carp slammed the scales down to a terrific 31lb 4oz, breaking the previous record by one and a half pounds.

Commenting on his catch to Association President, David Walters, Tony said “Perseverance has finally paid off, I‘ve spent so many  hours down here without a bite it’s great to have finally caught one and being the new record fish makes it feel absolutely brilliant and well worth the wait”.

The fish, pictured here with Tony, was officially weighed and witnessed by committee member Tom Dixon, who was also fishing at the time and had held the previous record, it was then returned to the water to fight another day.

The close season has been abolished for coarse waters except for St Ouens pond and the top pond at Les Mielles and also as stated at the AGM that the committee reserve the right to close off areas of any water that fish are spawning in without notice to members.

Could all members be courteous in this matter, as it may be you are fishing in an area that fish are spawning and you will be asked to move, your co-operation in this matter would be greatly appreciated as our fish welfare comes before our passion for fishing.
